The relationship of an insurance company to its insured policy holders is a unique one of trust. Sometimes insurance companies who have received premium payments over long periods of time seek to betray this trust and deny coverage, breaching their agreements or offering to settle claims at a fraction of their value, often with devastating personal effects on the insured. In other cases, insurance companies who insure parties at fault for an accident may seek to avoid paying legitimate claims lodged against their insured for injuries they cause. Florida law prohibits such practices and obligates every insurance company operating in this state to negotiate and settle claims with good faith and fair dealing.
